About This Journey
This flexible bike and hike tour combines two of the best ways to experience Slovenia’s Julian Alps. Cycling days connect lakes, villages and quiet Alpine roads, while guided walks lead beyond the road into forests, waterfalls and mountain landscapes inside Triglav National Park. The core journey is based around Lake Bled, with an optional extension to Kranjska Gora for guests who want more riding and another hiking day.
The itinerary can last from six to nine days and is adapted to the group’s experience. Cycling can be guided or self-guided, while the mountain walks are led by a local guide. That combination gives you freedom on the bike and appropriate local support on terrain where route choice and conditions matter most.
A balanced active holiday in the Julian Alps
The opening days use Bled as a comfortable base. One ride follows the valley and cycle route towards Lake Bohinj, with a more demanding return over the Pokljuka Plateau available for stronger cyclists. Another explores the backroads of Gorenjska, where meadows, historic villages and mountain views create rewarding riding without requiring a major pass every day.
Hiking days can focus on the Pokljuka Plateau, waterfalls near Kranjska Gora or higher trails when weather and the group’s ability allow. The exact route is selected according to current conditions. Optional days around Kranjska Gora can add another ride or walk without forcing every guest into the longest version of the programme.
Difficulty and equipment
This is not a fixed expedition with one compulsory level. Easier cycling options use valleys and dedicated cycle paths, while extensions add sustained climbs. Hiking can range from accessible mid-mountain paths to longer routes above the valleys. Guests should bring suitable walking shoes, layered clothing and rain protection; technical mountaineering equipment is not required for the standard programme.
Touring bikes, endurance road bikes and e-bikes can all work, depending on the selected stages. We match the bike and daily distances to your plans before arrival. For navigation and practical arrangements, see how our self-guided cycling tours work.
Accommodation and local support
Staying several nights in the same area reduces packing and leaves more time outdoors. Accommodation with breakfast, prepared cycling routes, the planned transfer between Bled and Kranjska Gora, and local support are included according to the final itinerary. Bike rental and airport transfers can be added.
When to travel
Late spring to early autumn is generally the best period. Summer provides long days and the widest choice of higher routes, while September often brings cooler riding conditions and fewer visitors. Hiking plans always remain subject to weather, trail conditions and the guide’s safety assessment.
Tell us how often you ride, what kind of walks you enjoy and how many days you have. We will build the appropriate version of the journey. Plan your bike and hike tour in Slovenia.

Why is Slovenia such a good destination for a cycling holiday?
Slovenia is an excellent choice for riders who want a lot of variety in a short amount of time. The country is small enough to explore easily, yet diverse enough to offer a new landscape every day. One stage can take you through quiet alpine valleys, the next past vineyards, forests, karst villages, or towards the Adriatic Sea.
Cycling here feels personal and relaxed. Many routes follow smaller local roads, scenic valleys, and well-maintained paths where the pace of travel allows you to notice more than just the distance covered. For active travellers, Slovenia combines nature, food, culture, and outdoor sport in a very compact and enjoyable way.
Is cycling in Slovenia safe?
Slovenia is generally considered a safe and comfortable country for cycling. Outside the main towns and larger roads, traffic is often light, especially on carefully selected cycling routes that we provide. From years of our experience, we will design the routes for you with the least amount of traffic possible. The road surface is usually good, and cycling is a familiar part of everyday outdoor life in many parts of the country.
As with any cycling holiday, normal road awareness is still important. We plan routes with safety, scenery, and ride quality in mind, avoiding busy sections whenever possible. But you are always responsible for your safety on the bike and must always adhere to road laws to ensure a smooth tour.
When is the best time of year for cycling in Slovenia?
The best months for a cycling holiday in Slovenia are usually from April to late October. During this period, the weather is most suitable for longer days outdoors, mountain roads are more accessible, and the countryside is at its most enjoyable.
May, June, September, and early October are especially good choices for riders who prefer milder temperatures and quieter routes. July and August can also be beautiful, particularly in the Alps, but these months are warmer and busier in popular tourist areas.
Can I bring my own bike?
Yes, you are welcome to travel with your own bike. Many experienced cyclists prefer using equipment they already know and feel comfortable with, especially on multi-day tours.
If bringing your own bike is not practical, we can provide premium road, gravel bikes and e-bikes for an additional fee. All options are carefully chosen for Slovenia's mixed terrain, from rolling countryside and paved climbs to gravel roads and longer touring days.
Do you offer group tours or private tours?
Our tours are mainly private and tailor-made. This means the tour can be adapted to your group, your riding level, and the type of holiday you want.
You can choose a relaxed pace with more time for food, wine, and sightseeing, or a more active version with longer stages and extra climbing. The daily schedule, route difficulty, and overall rhythm of the trip can all be adjusted before the tour.
Can I go hiking without a guide?
A guide is recommended for all hiking trips to ensure your safety and enjoyment on the hike. It allows you a deeper local experience, easier navigation, or extra confidence in mountain terrain. Guided hikes can also be adapted to the weather, fitness level, and interests of the group. If you are an experienced hiker and would like to enjoy the hikes on your own, let us know and we will find a solution.
