About This Journey
This carefully designed Slovenia cycling tour gives the Julian Alps the time they deserve. Over eight days, the journey moves gradually from Ljubljana’s green basin into the historic Škofja Loka Hills, crosses a quiet Alpine watershed to Lake Bohinj, links Slovenia’s two best-known lakes and continues to Kranjska Gora before the unforgettable ride over Vršič Pass. The final descent follows the young Soča River through the Trenta Valley to Bovec, where a hiking day reveals the landscape beyond the road.
The itinerary combines rewarding road cycling with enough time to explore Slovenia’s old towns, lakes, mountain valleys and local food. Daily stages are moderate in distance but varied in character, and several days include easier alternatives or optional extensions. It works particularly well for active travellers who want a genuine point-to-point cycling holiday in Slovenia without turning every day into a race against the clock.
Why choose this Slovenia cycling tour?
Many cycling holidays hurry through the Julian Alps on the way to the coast. This itinerary does the opposite: it gives the mountains, lakes and Soča Valley six active days, while keeping the journey varied and logistically natural. Ljubljana, Škofja Loka, Bohinj, Bled, Kranjska Gora and Bovec each have a distinct atmosphere, so the tour never feels repetitive even though it remains focused on one region.
The route also balances iconic places with quieter alternatives. You will see Lake Bled and cross Vršič Pass, but you will also ride through the Selca Valley, visit Završnica Lake and approach Bohinj through landscapes that many visitors never reach. Optional shortcuts and extensions allow the same core itinerary to work for traditional road cyclists, e-bike riders and mixed groups.
Cycling character and difficulty
Expect paved roads, dedicated cycle paths and quiet local lanes, with some unavoidable sections on roads shared with traffic. The riding becomes progressively more Alpine: the opening stage is rolling, Day 3 contains the greatest total elevation gain, and Day 6 features the longest sustained climb. Good basic fitness and confidence descending mountain roads are recommended.
The Vršič ascent includes historic cobbled hairpins, and mountain weather can change quickly. Riders should carry a light rain jacket and an extra layer even on warm days. Route details may be adapted when roadworks, weather, traffic regulations or seasonal closures make an alternative safer or more enjoyable.
Bike options
The itinerary works well with an endurance road bike, touring bike or e-bike. Road cyclists will appreciate the paved climbs and flowing valley roads, while e-bikes make the stages accessible to guests who prefer to focus on the landscape. Because Day 3 and Vršič Pass involve sustained climbing, e-bike batteries should be fully charged each morning and used conservatively on longer stages.
Best time to travel
The most reliable period is generally from late spring to early autumn, but the exact operating season depends on snow and conditions on Vršič Pass. Early summer brings long days and vivid green valleys; midsummer offers the warmest lake temperatures but also more visitors; September often combines stable weather with quieter roads. Mountain-road access and current traffic regulations should always be confirmed before departure.
Food and local experiences
The route crosses several distinct culinary regions. Ljubljana introduces modern Slovenian cooking and a lively café culture; Škofja Loka and the Alpine valleys are known for hearty dishes, dumplings and local cheeses; Bohinj is especially associated with mountain dairy traditions; Bled has its famous cream cake; and the Soča Valley combines Alpine ingredients with influences from nearby Italy. The moderate stage lengths leave time for coffee stops, local lunches and unhurried dinners.
Highlights of the Tour

Itinerary
Arrival in Ljubljana
Optional short ride | Flexible distance | Mostly flat
Your Julian Alps cycling tour begins in Ljubljana, a compact capital where riverside cafés, Baroque façades and the green slopes below Ljubljana Castle are all within an easy walk. After checking in, spend the afternoon exploring the pedestrian old town, crossing Plečnik’s bridges and getting a first taste of Slovenian food in the lively market and restaurant district beside the Ljubljanica River.
Guests arriving early can begin the holiday with a short introductory ride through the Ljubljana Basin. The route can follow quiet lanes and cycle paths toward the marshes, the Sava River or the villages north of the city, giving you time to check the bike setup before the point-to-point journey begins. The terrain is mostly flat, so the ride works as a relaxed warm-up rather than a formal first stage.
What you will experience: Ljubljana old town and Central Market • Ljubljana Castle and views over the basin • Optional warm-up ride on traffic-calmed roads and cycle paths
Ljubljana to Škofja Loka
Leave Ljubljana on cycle paths and quieter roads, gradually exchanging the capital’s urban rhythm for open fields, wooded hills and villages beneath the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. The first part of the route is deliberately gentle, allowing you to settle into the tour before a sequence of rolling climbs adds variety and wide views across central Slovenia.
The stage finishes in Škofja Loka, one of Slovenia’s most atmospheric medieval towns. Its old centre sits at the meeting point of two rivers and is compact enough to explore on foot after the ride. Walk through the historic town square, climb to Škofja Loka Castle or simply enjoy a drink beside the Sora River. The combination of accessible cycling and a characterful overnight stop sets the tone for the days ahead.
What you will experience: Quiet villages of the Ljubljana Basin • Views toward the Škofja Loka Hills • Škofja Loka old town and castle
Škofja Loka to Lake Bohinj
Easier train option available
This is the first true mountain stage of the tour and one of its most rewarding days. From Škofja Loka, the route follows the Selca Valley through a landscape of forested slopes, traditional villages and narrow river corridors. The road rises steadily toward the Alpine watershed, with long sections far removed from Slovenia’s busiest tourist routes.
Riders completing the full stage cross the hills toward Podbrdo before entering the Bohinj region, earning a memorable arrival at Slovenia’s largest natural lake. A more relaxed version uses the train between Podbrdo and Bohinjska Bistrica through the Bohinj railway tunnel, reducing both distance and climbing without losing the best parts of the day. Whichever option you choose, the stage ends beneath the high peaks of Triglav National Park, with time for a lakeside walk or a swim in suitable conditions.
What you will experience: Selca Valley and its mountain villages • Scenic railway option through the Bohinj Tunnel • Lake Bohinj and the Church of St John the Baptist
Lake Bohinj to Lake Bled and Završnica Valley
Begin beside Lake Bohinj and ride through the Upper Bohinj Valley, where traffic-free cycling sections and quiet village roads pass hayracks, meadows and traditional Alpine farms. The route then leaves the enclosed Bohinj basin and continues toward Lake Bled, offering a gradual transition from the wilder landscape of Triglav National Park to Slovenia’s most recognisable lakeside destination.
Rather than ending the ride immediately in Bled, the itinerary includes an additional loop toward the Završnica Valley. This peaceful reservoir and mountain backdrop provide a quieter counterpoint to busy Lake Bled and add just enough distance to make the stage satisfying. Back in Bled, you can walk along the lakeshore, visit the castle, take a traditional pletna boat to the island or reward the day’s ride with the original Bled cream cake.
What you will experience: Traditional villages of the Upper Bohinj Valley • Lake Bled, its island and cliff-top castle • Završnica Lake and a quieter Alpine valley
Lake Bled to Kranjska Gora and the Fusine Lakes
Optional Vršič extension
The route turns north-west and follows the Upper Sava Valley toward the increasingly dramatic walls of the Julian Alps. A mix of local roads and dedicated cycling paths carries you past villages such as Mojstrana and beneath some of Slovenia’s highest peaks. The gradient is generally steady rather than severe, and the mountain scenery builds throughout the day.
After reaching Kranjska Gora, continue through Rateče and cross the border into Italy for the Fusine Lakes, also known as Laghi di Fusine. The two glacial lakes lie beneath the Mangart mountain group and are among the most photogenic stops of the tour. Return to Kranjska Gora for the night, or add part of the climb toward Vršič Pass if you still have the legs and would like a more demanding finish.
What you will experience: Mojstrana and the Upper Sava cycling corridor • Rateče and the cross-border ride into Italy • The turquoise Fusine Lakes beneath Mount Mangart
Kranjska Gora to Bovec over Vršič Pass
Today brings the signature climb of the tour. From Kranjska Gora, the road passes Lake Jasna and begins its ascent through forest toward Vršič Pass at 1,611 metres. The northern side is famous for its numbered hairpins, several of them paved with historic cobblestones, while landmarks such as the Russian Chapel recall the difficult construction of the road during the First World War.
From the summit, a long and spectacular descent enters the Trenta Valley. The young Soča River appears beside the road in shades of turquoise and emerald, and frequent viewpoints invite you to stop at the source turn-off, river gorges and suspension bridges. The stage finishes in Bovec, a small adventure town surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Julian Alps. The distance is modest, but the climbing, scenery and sense of crossing the mountains make this the defining day of the holiday.
What you will experience: Lake Jasna and the Russian Chapel • The 50 hairpins of Vršič Pass • Trenta Valley and the upper Soča River
Hiking day in the Soča Valley
Flexible hiking programme | Easy to demanding options
After five days of cycling, slow the pace and experience the Soča Valley on foot. The hiking day is intentionally flexible, allowing the programme to match the weather, trail conditions and the group’s energy. An easier option can combine the Great Soča Gorge with riverside sections of the Soča Trail, while another short excursion leads to Virje Waterfall and the karst spring of the Glijun stream near Bovec.
More ambitious hikers can choose a longer mountain route or travel farther down the valley to the Tolmin Gorges. The day also leaves room for rafting, kayaking or a relaxed afternoon in Bovec. By replacing the bike with walking shoes, you gain access to hidden pools, forest paths and narrow gorges that are easy to miss from the road, completing the tour with a deeper view of Slovenia’s most celebrated Alpine river landscape.
What you will experience: Great Soča Gorge and sections of the Soča Trail • Virje Waterfall and the Glijun spring • Optional Tolmin Gorges, mountain hike or rafting experience
Departure from the Soča Valley
Breakfast and onward transfer
Enjoy a final morning beneath the Julian Alps before the tour comes to an end. Depending on your departure schedule, there may be time for a short walk through Bovec, coffee on the main square or one last visit to the Soča River.
Private or shared transfers can be arranged toward Ljubljana, Ljubljana Airport or another onward destination. Guests extending their stay can continue south through the wine regions of Goriška Brda and the Vipava Valley, or travel toward the Adriatic coast for a contrasting final chapter in Slovenia.
What you will experience: Flexible departure arrangements • Optional extension to Slovenian wine country or the coast • Final views of the Julian Alps and Soča Valley
Good to know before the tour
How difficult is the Julian Alps & Soča Valley Cycling Tour?
The tour is moderately challenging. Daily distances are generally between 45 and 60 kilometres, but the terrain includes sustained Alpine climbs and approximately 1,100 metres of elevation on the hardest day. An e-bike is an excellent option for guests who want to enjoy the route with less physical strain.
Can the hardest stage be made easier?
Yes. On the ride from Škofja Loka to Lake Bohinj, guests can use the train between Podbrdo and Bohinjska Bistrica. This reduces the most demanding section while preserving the scenic Selca Valley and the arrival in Bohinj.
Do I need experience riding mountain passes?
Previous experience is helpful but not essential for fit and confident cyclists. You should be comfortable with sustained climbing and long descents. The route over Vršič Pass includes cobbled hairpins and changing mountain weather, so controlled descending and suitable clothing are important.
Is this tour suitable for e-bikes?
Yes. The itinerary is very well suited to quality trekking or road-style e-bikes. Charging is available overnight, and the daily distances are within the range of modern batteries when assistance is used sensibly.
Can the tour be self-guided or guided?
The text can support either format. For a self-guided departure, guests receive route information, GPX files and logistical support. Guided departures can add a local cycling guide and vehicle support, subject to the package selected.
What happens if Vršič Pass is closed?
Vršič is a high mountain road and can be affected by snow, roadworks or temporary traffic restrictions. When the pass is not safely rideable, the route and transfers are adjusted to provide the best available alternative.
Can I extend the holiday to the Adriatic coast?
Yes. Bovec is a natural starting point for an extension through Goriška Brda, the Vipava Valley, the Karst and the Slovenian coast. This can also be combined with your existing Julian Alps to Adriatic Sea product.
Who is this tour for
- The tour is designed for recreational cyclists who are comfortable riding on consecutive days and can manage sustained climbs at their own pace. The distances are not extreme, but the route enters real Alpine terrain and includes one demanding day with approximately 1,100 metres of climbing, followed later by the ascent of Vršič Pass. E-bikes make the itinerary accessible to a wider range of guests, while stronger road cyclists can add optional climbs and extensions.
- It is also a strong choice for couples or mixed-ability groups. The train option on Day 3 provides a practical way to reduce the hardest stage, while the cycling paths around Bohinj, Bled and Kranjska Gora allow riders to focus on the scenery rather than traffic. The dedicated hiking day makes the programme feel like a complete active holiday rather than only a sequence of bike rides.
