About This Journey

This seven-day gravel journey crosses Slovenia from Lake Bled to the Adriatic and continues to Novigrad in Croatian Istria. It links forest tracks on the Jelovica Plateau, quiet roads through central Slovenia, the changing landscape around Lake Cerknica, the limestone Karst and the Parenzana cycling route. Few tours show the country’s geographic variety so clearly.

Daily stages generally cover 60 to 70 kilometres, with approximately 600 to 1,200 metres of climbing. The route mixes gravel, paved lanes and cycle paths rather than pursuing rough terrain for its own sake. Surfaces and exact lines can change with forestry work, weather and local access, so updated GPS tracks are an important part of the service.

From Alpine forests to the Karst

The opening stage climbs from Bled onto the forested Jelovica Plateau before descending towards Kranj. The next day reaches Ljubljana through gentler countryside, providing a contrasting urban evening. South of the capital, the route becomes more remote on the way to Lake Cerknica, a remarkable intermittent lake whose size changes with water conditions.

The journey then enters the Karst, where limestone, red soil, dry-stone walls and vineyards replace the Alpine scenery. Near Sežana, an optional visit to Lipica can be included. The approach to the coast passes through the wider Trieste area before reaching Izola and Piran, then follows the former Parenzana railway through Istria towards Novigrad.

Who is this gravel tour for?

The tour suits riders who are comfortable on unpaved roads and can manage consecutive days of moderate climbing. It is not a technical mountain-bike itinerary, but loose gravel, changing surfaces and steeper ramps require confident handling. A gravel bike with suitable gearing and robust tyres is the natural choice; an appropriate gravel e-bike can also work.

Because the trip crosses three countries—Slovenia, Italy and Croatia—riders should carry the travel documents required for their nationality. Border rules can change, and each guest remains responsible for meeting current entry requirements.

Luggage, accommodation and navigation

Six nights in comfortable accommodation with breakfast are included. Main luggage is transferred between destinations, leaving you to carry only daily essentials and repair equipment. GPS tracks, route notes and local support help the journey remain manageable even as the terrain and language change.

The tour can be self-guided or privately guided. Compare the two formats on our pages for self-guided tours and guided cycling tours.

When to ride

Late spring and early autumn usually provide the best balance of daylight, temperature and trail conditions. Summer is also possible, but exposed Karst and coastal stages can be hot. Heavy rain can change forest and gravel surfaces, so route adjustments sometimes improve both safety and enjoyment.

Why is Slovenia such a good destination for a cycling holiday?

Slovenia is an excellent choice for riders who want a lot of variety in a short amount of time. The country is small enough to explore easily, yet diverse enough to offer a new landscape every day. One stage can take you through quiet alpine valleys, the next past vineyards, forests, karst villages, or towards the Adriatic Sea.

Cycling here feels personal and relaxed. Many routes follow smaller local roads, scenic valleys, and well-maintained paths where the pace of travel allows you to notice more than just the distance covered. For active travellers, Slovenia combines nature, food, culture, and outdoor sport in a very compact and enjoyable way.

Is cycling in Slovenia safe?

Slovenia is generally considered a safe and comfortable country for cycling. Outside the main towns and larger roads, traffic is often light, especially on carefully selected cycling routes that we provide. From years of our experience, we will design the routes for you with the least amount of traffic possible. The road surface is usually good, and cycling is a familiar part of everyday outdoor life in many parts of the country.

As with any cycling holiday, normal road awareness is still important. We plan routes with safety, scenery, and ride quality in mind, avoiding busy sections whenever possible. But you are always responsible for your safety on the bike and must always adhere to road laws to ensure a smooth tour.

When is the best time of year for cycling in Slovenia?

The best months for a cycling holiday in Slovenia are usually from April to late October. During this period, the weather is most suitable for longer days outdoors, mountain roads are more accessible, and the countryside is at its most enjoyable.

May, June, September, and early October are especially good choices for riders who prefer milder temperatures and quieter routes. July and August can also be beautiful, particularly in the Alps, but these months are warmer and busier in popular tourist areas.

Can I bring my own bike?

Yes, you are welcome to travel with your own bike. Many experienced cyclists prefer using equipment they already know and feel comfortable with, especially on multi-day tours.

If bringing your own bike is not practical, we can provide premium road, gravel bikes and e-bikes for an additional fee. All options are carefully chosen for Slovenia's mixed terrain, from rolling countryside and paved climbs to gravel roads and longer touring days.

Do you offer group tours or private tours?

Our tours are mainly private and tailor-made. This means the tour can be adapted to your group, your riding level, and the type of holiday you want.

You can choose a relaxed pace with more time for food, wine, and sightseeing, or a more active version with longer stages and extra climbing. The daily schedule, route difficulty, and overall rhythm of the trip can all be adjusted before the tour.
