About This Journey

A week of gravel riding from Slovenia’s vineyards to the Alpine landscapes of the Soča Valley. This journey links the Karst, Vipava Valley and Goriška Brda with Cividale del Friuli and the Natisone Valleys in neighbouring Italy before returning to Slovenia for a finish in Tolmin.

Five cycling stages sit between an arrival day and a departure day. Choose the Classic route for a more balanced week, or add Mountain options on selected stages when you want extra climbing. Accommodation, luggage transfers, GPS navigation and local support are organised for you.

Gravel cycling through an open landscape in Slovenia

One journey, two ways to ride

The Classic itinerary covers approximately 285 km with around 3,200 m of climbing. Most cycling days are 45–65 km with approximately 400–900 m of ascent. It is designed for recreational cyclists who enjoy gravel and can ride several consecutive days, without making major mountain climbs compulsory.

Mountain options are available on days 3, 4 and 6. Choosing all of them creates a more demanding week of up to approximately 300 km and around 5,000 m of climbing. You can also mix Classic and Mountain routes according to your experience and preferred effort. The alternatives are agreed before departure and provided in the route information.

Gravel bike on a shaded woodland track

From the Karst to the Soča Valley

Your first ride crosses the Karst towards Štanjel and the Vipava Valley. The following stages connect Vipava with Solkan, then pass through the wine hills of Goriška Brda towards Cividale del Friuli. From Italy’s Natisone Valleys, the journey leads back to Kobarid and finishes beside the Soča around Tolmin.

The route combines gravel tracks, smaller roads and paved connections. A gravel bike suited to mixed surfaces is the natural choice. This is a cycling holiday with time to enjoy the changing landscapes, villages and food along the way, rather than a race against the clock.
